Why people line up early at airline gates

A pilot explains the real reason passengers crowd the gate before their boarding zone is called, and it has nothing to do with being first on the plane.

People stand in line at airline gates even when it is not their boarding zone. A pilot who was supposed to be on board half an hour earlier questions why passengers do this.

The baggage claim offenders

The real problem, according to the pilot, involves people at baggage claim who stand directly in front of the belt. They stay there regardless of whether they see their bag or not.

The overhead bin race

The reason passengers line up early is simple. They want to be first in line when their boarding zone actually is called. Their goal is to prevent the overhead container space from running out, which would force them to check their carry on bag.
